Within days, the animal was diagnosed with parvovirus and worms—and the buyer wanted his money back. Before the courtroom could settle that dispute, another case brought a failed engagement, unpaid charges, missing property, and a ten-month-old child into the same tense conversation. In both matters, the judge focused less on emotion than on what the evidence could actually prove.

Case One : The puppy bought on a Saturday night

The first case began with a transaction that appeared simple: Steve Lightner had answered an online Craigslist advertisement for a boxer puppy. The seller, Brandi Ponchot, had reportedly wanted $400 but agreed to accept $300 if the puppy was purchased that day. They met at a Walgreens parking lot on October 1, a Saturday night.

That meeting would later become central to the dispute. Lightner told the court that he asked whether the puppy was healthy and received an affirmative answer. He also understood that the puppy had received an initial set of shots and had been dewormed. But there was no written health guarantee or breeder’s contract; the disputed promise appeared in a text exchange and in the parties’ differing accounts.

The puppy was approximately nine weeks old when Lightner took her home. Brandi Ponchot’s account was that she had only possessed the puppy for about a week. She said she was selling the animal because her four-year-old boxer had not adjusted well, repeatedly nipping at the puppy and creating what she considered an unsafe or unsuitable situation.

Lightner also noticed an injury or bite mark on the puppy. Brandi Ponchot connected the sale to the difficulty between the two dogs, while Lightner later questioned whether the puppy’s condition had been fully disclosed before the sale. The courtroom therefore had to look beyond the price and ask a more difficult question: what, precisely, had been promised at the time of purchase?

The health question and the missing guarantee

After bringing the puppy home, Lightner said he kept her in a cage at night because Brandi Ponchot had told him that was her routine. The puppy cried, so he and his wife eventually allowed her to sleep in their bed. Lightner described the puppy as initially appearing well enough to sleep through the night, but he later acknowledged that signs of trouble began to appear on Sunday.

Brandi Ponchot contacted him that Sunday and asked how the puppy was doing. Lightner said he told her the puppy was fine. By Monday, however, he wanted more information about the animal’s medical history. He learned that the shots had not come from the breeder’s veterinarian as he had assumed; according to the testimony, Brandi Ponchot had administered them using supplies obtained from Tractor Supply.

The puppy was taken to a veterinarian on the following Wednesday—after Lightner had kept her from Saturday night through Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. The veterinary findings became the financial foundation of the lawsuit: the puppy had parvovirus and worms. Lightner sought the return of his purchase price as well as reimbursement for veterinary expenses.

The medical costs became a source of confusion in the courtroom. Lightner described an estimate of more than $600 for immediate treatment and warned that emergency care could cost roughly $1,000 per day. He said he contacted Brandi Ponchot because he needed the purchase money to continue caring for the sick puppy and was prepared to return the animal.

Brandi Ponchot disputed the characterization of their communications. She said Lightner sent a text rather than calling and that she did not respond because she did not know what to do when he appeared to be asking for substantial sums. Brandi Ponchot characterized the request as involving $17 in veterinary bills, prompting the judge to separate that exchange from the much larger treatment estimate.

The most damaging disagreement concerned what Brandi Ponchot had promised. Lightner maintained that she had said the puppy was healthy and would take the animal back if he was not satisfied. He also referred to a witness and text messages that, in his view, supported his understanding. Brandi Ponchot denied giving a health guarantee or promising a refund. She said that if the puppy needed another home, she would help find one—but that was not the same as agreeing to take the puppy back and repay the purchase price.

Why the puppy lawsuit was dismissed

The judge did not rule that the puppy had been healthy. The medical diagnosis was not the central question. Instead, Lightner had to establish that Brandi Ponchot knowingly sold him a sick puppy, or that a clear warranty or implied guarantee required her to assume responsibility for the later illness.

The judge repeatedly returned to the timing. Lightner had seen the puppy in the Walgreens parking lot, allowed her to walk around for a few minutes, and then took her home. He did not take her to a veterinarian on Sunday or Monday. The judge reasoned that if the puppy had appeared severely ill at the time of the sale—or if Lightner had recognized serious symptoms immediately—he could have acted sooner.

The court also considered the absence of a written guarantee. A breeder or commercial dog seller might ordinarily provide documentation identifying vaccinations, deworming, and a period during which the animal’s health is warranted. Here, Lightner had purchased from a private individual and did not receive such a document.

Lightner argued that the puppy’s later medical records showed she had been underweight and skeletal. The judge countered that such a condition, if visibly apparent, should have been observable when Lightner picked up the puppy. The court found no sufficient evidence that Brandi Ponchot had masked symptoms or knowingly concealed the illness.

The accusation that Brandi Ponchot had gone to extreme lengths to avoid responsibility—including an allegation that she had faked her own death and the deaths of her children—did not establish the missing element. Suspicion could not replace proof. The judge dismissed Lightner’s case, stating that he had not demonstrated a viable claim against Brandi Ponchot.

The ruling was narrow but significant: a sick puppy and serious treatment bills did not, by themselves, prove that the seller had knowingly breached a promise or sold an animal she knew to be ill.

Case Two : A broken engagement and disputed property

The second case shifted from animal health to the aftermath of a failed relationship. Raymond Benson sued his former fiancée, Vanessa Baldini. His claims involved unpaid credit-card charges, the return of a tablet, and a set of engagement rings.

The rings were the least disputed item. Baldini’s answer made clear that the engagement was over and that Benson could have the rings back. When the rings were presented in court, the judge treated their return as straightforward and directed that they be given to Benson.

The credit-card issue was more complicated. Benson said Baldini had used his Capital One Mastercard during a trip to Stockton to visit her sister. He had not given her a separate authorized card; he had allowed her to use his one card. The transcript refers to charges connected to March 2015, but the judge made clear that she was not interested in litigating that older credit-card bill in the present proceeding.

What remained was the tablet. Benson said Baldini had taken an LG tablet when she collected her belongings. Baldini denied stealing it, but when the judge asked whether it was Benson’s tablet, she acknowledged that it was. The judge ordered her to turn it over, resolving that portion of the property dispute.

Baldini also identified personal property she had left at Benson’s home: a dining-room table and mirrors on the wall. The judge told her she had five days to arrange pickup, with notice and an escort. Because the property was located in Benson’s home, the judge also said a police standby order would be appropriate. Baldini would need to be present to identify the items being removed.

When a courtroom cannot decide visitation

The relationship dispute also involved a ten-month-old son. Benson said he had not seen the child for some time and told the court that he had been trying to serve Baldini with family-court papers. The SRT records two different dates for his last contact with the child: September 25 in one exchange, and August 25 later in the hearing. He also said Baldini had not been working at the location where he attempted service, making her difficult to locate.

The judge explained that the small-claims courtroom did not have jurisdiction to order visitation. That issue belonged in Family Court. Still, the judge addressed the circumstances because the parties’ relationship and parenting history had become part of the conflict.

Benson and Baldini had both worked, though not the same hours. Baldini said she worked Saturdays, and Benson stated that he cared for their son while she was working. The judge emphasized that this history mattered: if Benson had previously been entrusted with the child, it would be difficult to argue that he suddenly posed a danger merely because the relationship had ended.

The judge stressed that a child has two parents and that both parents are entitled to have a role in the child’s life. A parent cannot deprive the other parent of contact simply because the adults no longer get along. At the same time, the judge did not issue a visitation order. She told Benson that he needed to have Baldini properly served and either retain a lawyer or present the issue to the appropriate Family Court judge.

The exchange became heated. Benson tried to explain that allegations of abuse were the reason he had not seen his son and said he was under emotional distress. The judge warned both parties to listen and threatened to remove them if the interruptions continued. Her comments were not a substitute for a custody ruling; they were an explanation of what a properly presented family-law case would require.

The judge’s final rulings

The two cases ended with different lessons. In the puppy case, Lightner’s claim was dismissed because the evidence did not establish a knowingly concealed illness, an enforceable health warranty, or a clear promise of a refund. The puppy was ill, but the court could not assign legal responsibility on that record.

In the Benson-Baldini matter, the judge ordered the return of the engagement rings and the LG tablet, allowed Baldini to arrange collection of her dining-room table and mirrors, and directed the parties toward proper legal channels for the visitation dispute. The judge did not decide custody or visitation in small claims.

Together, the cases showed how quickly personal conflict can expand beyond the original dispute. A Craigslist purchase became an argument about medical evidence and implied warranties. A broken engagement became a property dispute and then a question about parental access. Yet the courtroom kept returning to the same principle: emotion may explain why people are fighting, but evidence determines what a judge can order.

FAQ

Did Steve Lightner win his lawsuit over the boxer puppy?

No. The judge dismissed Steve Lightner’s case. The court found that he had not proved Brandi Ponchot knowingly sold him a sick puppy or provided a clear health guarantee requiring a refund and payment of veterinary bills.

What illness did the puppy have?

According to the testimony, the puppy was diagnosed with parvovirus and worms after being taken to a veterinarian on the Wednesday following the Saturday-night purchase.

Where did Steve Lightner and Brandi Ponchot meet to complete the sale?

They met at a Walgreens parking lot on October 1, a Saturday night, after Lightner responded to a Craigslist advertisement.

What did Raymond Benson seek from Vanessa Baldini?

Benson sought reimbursement for disputed credit-card charges and the return of an LG tablet and engagement rings. The judge ordered the rings and tablet returned but did not pursue the older credit-card bill in that proceeding.

Did Judge Judy order visitation with Benson’s son?

No. The judge explained that she did not have jurisdiction to order visitation in that courtroom. Benson was directed to pursue the matter in Family Court after properly serving Baldini.
