The plaintiff was identified as 20-year-old Yousef DoBal, who was suing Michael James for medical bills and punitive damages after a dog attack.

DoBal explained that he was working independently and making deliveries for a pharmacy owned by a friend. He did not work for the pharmacy every week. The prescription, however, had been ordered after Michael James visited a dermatologist for a rash. According to the testimony, the dermatologist’s office contacted the pharmacy, and the pharmacy later called James to say the medication would be delivered.

The timing became important. DoBal said he was bitten on September 26. James placed his dermatologist visit around September 22 or 23, while the prescription arrived at approximately 7:30 p.m. on September 26. Judge Judy then examined how the delivery unfolded.

What Happened at the Door

DoBal testified that a check had been taped to the door and that he was expected to leave the medication there. He described the property as a private house with a screen door. There were no steps; a person could walk directly toward the main door after opening the screen door.

DoBal said he opened the screen door and took the envelope containing the check. Before he could put the medication outside, the main door opened. The person who opened it was a four-year-old child—the grandson James and his household were raising. The family dog then came out and bit DoBal’s hand.

The dog was a Great Pyrenees, a large breed. DoBal testified that he had not rung the bell or knocked. He had already taken the check and was about to leave the medication when the child opened the door.

After the bite, Michael James came outside. DoBal said James asked whether he was okay, but DoBal also described James as rude and complained that he did not receive an apology. When Judge Judy pressed him for the exact words, the testimony settled on a brief exchange: James asked if he was okay, DoBal said he was, and then 911 was called.

DoBal said he contacted the person he had been working with because he did not know what to do. That person came to the scene and called for help. DoBal then went to Countryside Hospital, where photographs were taken of the injury. He identified two wounds on his left hand—one on a finger and another nearby. The hospital cleaned the wounds and placed a Band-Aid on the hand.

The SRT later includes DoBal describing fire trucks, dog control, paramedics, and eventually a police officer at the property. He also said he needed to return to the hospital for a shot because it was unclear whether the dog had received its required shot. The transcript does not develop the medical treatment beyond those details.

The Medical Bills and the $1,800 Judgment

DoBal said he waited about a week before contacting a lawyer because he was waiting for James to pay the hospital bills. After the lawyer contacted James, James reportedly said he had no insurance. The lawyer then indicated that the injuries were not substantial enough to pursue the matter in the way DoBal expected. DoBal nevertheless continued with the claim in small claims court after James refused to pay the bills.

Judge Judy examined the paperwork. DoBal had one bill from a doctor and another from the hospital. He acknowledged that he had not paid any part of the bills. The judge made clear that any money awarded would go directly to the medical facilities rather than serve as a windfall for the plaintiff.

The defense position was blunt: James said the dog had not touched DoBal. But Judge Judy focused on the circumstances surrounding the encounter. James had not been standing at the door when the incident began. A four-year-old had opened the door, and the Great Pyrenees had come out. The question was not simply whether James personally saw the bite; it was whether the testimony and surrounding conduct supported DoBal’s account.

Judge Judy pointed to James’s own reported response. If a large dog had not been involved, she suggested, there would have been little reason for someone to ask the delivery man whether he was okay. Her point was not that the phrase alone proved every detail of the incident. Rather, it formed part of the surrounding account of what happened immediately afterward.

The court entered judgment for the plaintiff in the amount of $1,800. Judge Judy again stated that the checks would go to the medical facilities. The first case ended with the legal dispute resolved, although the post-hearing comments in the SRT show that Michael James continued to insist the situation had been set up and that DoBal had exaggerated or lied. DoBal, for his part, said he was afraid of dogs.

A Second Case: Cousins and a Broken-Down Mercedes

The next matter was Phillips versus Jackson. LaVonda Phillips was suing her cousin, Rose Jackson, over a 2000 Mercedes-Benz. Phillips claimed that Jackson had taken the car and forged her name. She sought the value of the vehicle, along with punitive damages connected to the alleged forgery.

Jackson gave a different account. She said she had purchased the car from Phillips and that, if Phillips regained the vehicle, Jackson wanted to recover the money she had spent repairing it.

The car’s history was complicated before either cousin entered the courtroom. Phillips said she had obtained the Mercedes from her brother, Robert, in 2015. Robert had bought it at an auction. Phillips said she paid about $700 for repairs, including motor mounts, but the vehicle stopped running in March 2016. It then remained inoperable for a long period—described in the testimony as two years.

Judge Judy summarized the situation this way: Phillips had effectively received the car from her brother, paid $700 to make it usable, and then saw it stop running shortly afterward. The Mercedes sat there until the cousins began discussing what to do with it.

The Disputed Purchase Price

According to Phillips, Rose wanted to buy the car. Phillips’s version was that she told Rose to take the Mercedes, find out what it would cost to repair, and then negotiate a price. Instead, Phillips said, Rose took the car, had it repaired, and began using it. The vehicle was ultimately being used by Rose’s daughter.

The paperwork had also changed. Phillips said a new title had been obtained and that the title was held in both Rose’s and her daughter’s names for insurance purposes. Phillips then sought $3,500, maintaining that this was the amount to be negotiated after the vehicle was running again.

Rose’s account was much simpler. She said Phillips told her to take the car because it had not been running, and that Phillips would sell it to her for $500. Rose acknowledged paying money, but the cousins disagreed about how much and when.

Rose testified that she paid $200 initially and another $100 on July 12, for $300 in total. She said she later tried to pay the remaining amount, but Phillips would not accept it. Phillips disputed the timeline and said Rose had paid $100 in April and another $100 in July. Under questioning, Phillips ultimately agreed that Rose had paid $300 in total, though not necessarily in the same installments Rose described.

That left $200 still due under the $500 purchase price described by Rose. Judge Judy asked where the money was. Rose first said it was in her purse, then explained that it was in her car at the hotel. She offered to retrieve it, but Judge Judy did not want to wait because she had other plans for the afternoon, including going to the gym and getting her nails done.

Judge Judy told Phillips that Rose owed her another $200 for the purchase of the car. She also told Phillips that she had no case on the larger demand: Phillips had received the car for nothing from her brother, it had been dead for two years, Rose had it repaired, and Rose was now using it.

The Unresolved Forgery Claim

Phillips tried to redirect the case toward the alleged forgery. She said Rose had taken the car out of her name before paying all of the money. When Judge Judy asked whether Phillips was claiming that Rose had forged her name, Phillips said yes.

The judge’s response was direct: if Phillips believed her name had been forged, she should go to the police. The courtroom case, as presented, did not resolve that allegation through a finding of forgery. Instead, Judge Judy concluded the proceeding and excused the parties.

The post-case comments preserved in the SRT show that the family disagreement remained painful. One side denied trying to keep the other person’s money, while the discussion returned to the DMV title and the fact that the cousins still loved one another despite the dispute. The final reflection was that the episode had become a lesson.

What These Cases Show

The two cases involved ordinary arrangements that became difficult once trust broke down: a child opened a door while a large dog came outside, and cousins remembered a car agreement differently.

Judge Judy’s decisions turned on the details the parties could establish: what happened at the threshold, what bills existed, what had been paid, and what remained owed. The dog-bite case ended with an $1,800 judgment for Yousef DoBal, directed toward the medical facilities. The Mercedes case rejected LaVonda Phillips’s $3,500 claim while recognizing Rose Jackson’s remaining $200 obligation under the $500 purchase account presented in court. The separate forgery allegation was directed to law enforcement rather than decided as part of the small-claims dispute.

FAQ

Who sued Michael James over the dog bite?

Twenty-year-old Yousef DoBal sued Michael James for medical bills and punitive damages after DoBal said James’s Great Pyrenees bit his left hand during a pharmacy delivery.

When did the dog-bite incident happen?

DoBal testified that the incident occurred on September 26, at approximately 7:30 p.m. during the delivery of a prescription.

What was the judgment in DoBal v.
