A property line can survive years of bad blood. But in Judge Judith Scheindlin’s courtroom, both became evidence. In one case, Heather Legler wanted Finn returned after a breakup, arguing that she had paid for the dog and handled much of his early care. Owen Sprute answered with a fact the judge could not ignore: Finn had lived with him continuously, including the most recent months. In the next case, an argument between Jack Faskowicz and Ben Beroukhai narrowed to a question that sounded simple but was not: when a plant grows across a boundary, who has the right to cut it?

Case One : The Finn Dispute Begins After a Breakup

The first case, identified in the episode as Legler versus Sprute, involved 24-year-old Heather Legler and her former boyfriend, Owen Sprute. Legler was suing for the return of her dog, Finn—a dispute that placed a private breakup inside a public courtroom.

The timeline was central. Legler and Sprute began dating in June. The court later referred to their shared life as spanning 2014 to 2018. They lived with Sprute’s aunt from August 2015 until May 2016, when Legler purchased a house in her own name for $185,000. During the relationship, Legler said she paid household expenses including electricity, heat, and garbage service, while Sprute paid the mortgage and other costs.

In February 2017, a dog joined the household. Legler said Finn was obtained for her birthday. Sprute corrected that account: the dog was acquired in February 2017, but not specifically for her birthday. Both agreed that they had gone together to see a dog from the same litter. The dog they initially considered—identified in the testimony as Fisher—was already spoken for. They then chose Finn from that litter.

Because the puppies were too young, Finn did not go home immediately. He was to receive vaccinations and be neutered before the couple could take him. Sprute testified that he later picked Finn up on February 22 while Legler was at work. The record also showed that a payment of $494.06 was made through PayPal to Happy Tails from Legler’s account. Legler had the receipt and said she also had adoption documents, photographs, microchip records, and veterinary statements connected to the dog.

For Legler, those records formed the basis of her claim. She maintained that she had paid for Finn and had done much of the early work of caring for him. She told Judge Judy that the payments, veterinary bills, microchip information, and photographs were in her name. Her position was not merely that Finn had once lived with her; she believed the documents established that the dog was hers.

What the Court Heard About Ownership and Care

The relationship ended on January 12, 2018. Legler left the home, but she did not take Finn. She also left her cat behind because, as she explained, she planned to return and collect both animals.

That return did not happen until April 12, when Legler had obtained her own apartment. Sprute gave her the cat. He did not give her Finn. Legler said Sprute would not let her into the house and that he got in her face. The question before the court remained narrower: after the breakup, where had Finn been living, and what arrangement was best supported by the evidence?

By the time of the hearing, Finn had been living with Sprute for approximately seven months after Legler left. Judge Judy repeatedly focused on that continuity. Finn was at least 18 months old—described in the hearing as approximately 19 months—and, for most of his life, he had lived with one constant person: Sprute.

The financial evidence made the dispute more complicated rather than less. Legler had paid for the dog, while Sprute had paid the mortgage and other household expenses. The couple had lived together for years, but there was no joint bank account. The hearing established a shared household in which expenses had been divided, not a simple story of one person paying for everything.

That distinction mattered. A payment record could show that Legler contributed to acquiring Finn. It did not automatically answer what should happen after the couple separated, particularly when the dog had remained with Sprute continuously. Judge Judy acknowledged the shared history but separated the former couple’s financial arrangements from the dog’s present stability.

Why Judge Judy Refused to Uproot Finn

Judge Judy’s reasoning turned on Finn’s lived experience. She told Legler that the fact the couple had lived together did not, by itself, decide the dog’s ownership or placement. More importantly, the dog had been with Sprute for his whole life, including the most recent period after Legler moved out.

For the judge to order Finn removed from Sprute’s care, there would have to be a compelling reason. The hearing did not provide one. Legler had found an apartment that could accommodate the dog, but the judge did not consider that change enough to justify uprooting an animal that had remained in one home with one constant caregiver.

Legler continued to insist that she had paid for Finn and had the forms to prove it. She said she wanted her dog back. Sprute answered that Finn belonged where he was and that he had been with him his entire life.

Judge Judy ultimately told Legler that, if she wanted a dog, she should consider getting one. The hearing ended without Finn being returned to her. The decision, as presented in the SRT, was grounded less in a declaration that one former partner had never contributed and more in the court’s refusal to disrupt Finn’s established living arrangement on the evidence before it.

Case Two : The Bougainvillea Dispute Between Jack Faskowicz and Ben Beroukhai

The next case changed the setting from a former shared home to neighboring properties. Jack Faskowicz was suing Ben Beroukhai, his neighbor, over alleged trespassing and the cutting of his bougainvillea and tree limbs.

Faskowicz told the court he had owned or lived in his home for approximately 21 years and had been Beroukhai’s neighbor for about 18 years. Their relationship, he said, had been difficult from the beginning. The dispute that reached court focused on plants and trees along the boundary between the homes.

Faskowicz claimed that Beroukhai’s workers had gone onto his property and mutilated his bougainvillea. He said the plants had once grown high and had been cut down to the roots. He also complained that tree limbs had been cut along the property line. Beroukhai did not deny that trees had been trimmed, but his position was that vegetation was hanging over his property and could therefore be cut back.

Photographs were presented. Judge Judy examined them closely and pressed Faskowicz to identify what was actually on his property, what extended over a public sidewalk, and what—if anything—crossed onto Beroukhai’s land. Faskowicz repeatedly emphasized that the roots were on his side. The judge kept returning to the same question: were the branches or plants hanging over the neighbor’s property?

The distinction between roots and overhanging growth became the center of the case. A plant could be rooted on one side of a boundary while extending into another area. For the court, the relevant issue was not simply who had planted or maintained the bougainvillea. It was where the growth was located in relation to the property line.

The Property Line Becomes the Central Question

Faskowicz said Beroukhai’s workers included construction or maintenance personnel. He described seeing five or six people with a pickup truck and said that, when he asked what they were doing, he received the response “Nada, nada” before they left. Beroukhai disputed the account and said he had not instructed anyone to cut Faskowicz’s plants, either intentionally or unintentionally.

The testimony also showed why the judge was cautious about assigning responsibility for every cut. Beroukhai said he had a gardener who worked regularly and a maintenance worker who had been with him for years. Judge Judy asked whether this person was a gardener, maintenance worker, or construction worker. Beroukhai answered in effect that he was more than one of those things.

Judge Judy then reviewed a property sketch and photographs. She concluded that some of the plants were on Beroukhai’s property or were extending over it. Under the rule she articulated in court, Beroukhai was allowed to cut growth that crossed over his property line. The judge also rejected the idea that a neighbor had to tolerate vegetation hanging over his house simply because the plants were rooted elsewhere.

But that permission had a boundary of its own. Beroukhai and his workers could not go onto Faskowicz’s property without permission. Judge Judy made that point directly: a neighbor could cut what was over his side, but he should not enter the other property to do it.

Faskowicz also brought up a police report. He said police had treated the incident as a civil matter. Judge Judy explained that what the police reportedly said was hearsay, although she agreed to look at the report itself. The report stated that Faskowicz last saw his plants on February 8 and saw them cut on February 9. It recorded his belief that the neighbor was responsible, but the timing alone did not establish who had performed the cutting.

The Boundary Rule Judge Judy Emphasized

The court’s message was practical: property owners have an interest in maintaining their side of a boundary, but that right does not authorize trespassing. Judge Judy told Beroukhai to ensure that his workers did not enter Faskowicz’s property. She also noted that Beroukhai might not know what maintenance workers were doing while he was away, which made supervision important.

At the same time, the judge rejected the claim that Faskowicz could prevent Beroukhai from cutting vegetation that extended over Beroukhai’s property. Faskowicz might love his bougainvillea, she said in substance, but Beroukhai did not have to look at it hanging over his home. The same reasoning applied to a dead palm tree extending over the neighbor’s house.

The two cases involved very different disputes, yet they shared a courtroom theme: possession and responsibility were not decided by emotion alone. In the Finn case, a payment receipt and adoption paperwork were weighed against the dog’s long-term living arrangement. In the bougainvillea case, photographs and competing accounts were measured against a physical property line.

Judge Judy’s approach in both matters was to narrow the argument. The question was not who felt more wronged. It was what the evidence established, what had changed, and what remedy the court could justify. Finn remained with the person who had cared for him continuously. The neighbor dispute ended with a clear warning: trim what crosses onto your side, but do not cross the line yourself.

FAQ

Who was suing over the dog Finn?

Heather Legler sued her former boyfriend, Owen Sprute, for the return of Finn. The episode identifies the case as Legler versus Sprute.

Why did Heather Legler want Finn returned?

Legler said she had paid for Finn and had records including the receipt, adoption forms, photographs, microchip information, and veterinary statements. She also said she had handled much of the dog’s early care.

Why did Judge Judy leave Finn with Owen Sprute?

The SRT shows Judge Judy focusing on Finn’s continuous living arrangement with Sprute, including the months after Legler left. She did not find the evidence compelling enough to uproot the dog.

Who was involved in the bougainvillea dispute?

Jack Faskowicz sued his neighbor, Ben Beroukhai, alleging trespassing and damage to his bougainvillea and trees.

Could Ben Beroukhai cut the plants?

Judge Judy stated that Beroukhai could cut vegetation hanging over his property. However, he and his workers were not permitted to enter Faskowicz’s property without permission.

Did the SRT state a money judgment in the neighbor case?

The provided SRT focuses on the property-line ruling and the warning against unauthorized entry. It does not clearly state a separate damages award or monetary judgment.

A dog can survive the end of a relationship.
